Dir. Kelly Reichardt
2019 | 112 mins | USA
John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, and Ewen Bremner
Award-winning director, Kelly Reichardt, returns with the beautifully perceptive and patient story of friendship, hardship and tasty delights of frontier life in the Pacific Northwest. In 1820s Oregon, a taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) travels west to join a group of fur trappers.
When his journey lands him in the company of a Chinese immigrant, he finds true connection and the opportunity to collaborate. Combining their skills they adopt a successful business selling delicious sweet cakes made from fresh milk. However, there is only one cow within their territory and she belongs to a wealthy land owner who hasn’t given his permission to milk her.
From this simple premise Reichardt constructs an interrogates the foundation on which the country was built and shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America.
